The Federal Government has officially unveiled the FreeTV platform as one of the components of Nigeria’s much-talked about Digital Switch-over project.

As per the government’s announcement, the project seeks to increase access to television services in Nigeria by offering free-to-air digital services for viewing television content without the cost of subscription fees charged by the various pay-TV operators in the country.

In a recent press release made on the Federal Government’s official X account, it was noted that the FreeTV service will ensure that “no Nigerian is left behind” in the process of the switch-over from analogue to digital television transmission.

“FreeTV is part of Nigeria’s Digital Switch-Over programme and is designed to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind as the country moves fully from analogue to digital broadcasting,” the statement read.

At present, millions of Nigerian households rely on satellite television services such as DStv and other subscription-based platforms, often at significant monthly cost. The introduction of FreeTV is therefore expected to ease access to locally produced content while reducing the financial burden on viewers.

The government also noted that the platform will prioritise Nigerian programming, offering a range of indigenous content without subscription fees.

While details on coverage, signal reach, and rollout phases are still being fine-tuned, the announcement has already sparked public interest, particularly among households seeking more affordable entertainment options.

As Nigeria moves deeper into digital broadcasting, FreeTV is being positioned as a major step toward expanding media access and strengthening local content consumption.
