World Cup: Ghana frustrate England in hard-fought stalemate
England missed out on securing an early spot in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being held to a goalless draw by Ghana at Boston Stadium on Tuesday.
Following their exciting win over Croatia, there was hope that the team of Thomas Tuchel would be able to build on the result, but they had problems in breaking down Ghana’s resolute defense.
England was in control of the ball for most parts of the game but lacked imagination and penetration in their attacking play. England failed to have any attempts on goal in the first half and did not put anything past the Ghana’s resolute backline until the 57th minute.
Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers were brought on by Tuchel as he sought to change the tide in the game, with Saka hitting an incredible save from Ghana’s goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
Nico O’Reilly almost scored the winner for England in stoppage time, hitting the crossbar with a header, while Marc Guehi had his header blocked off the line.
This result means that England remain top of Group L, but they need a positive result in their last group stage game against Panama.
