Meta reaches $16.7bn deal in landmark teen safety lawsuit
Meta Platforms Inc., which runs Facebook and Instagram, will pay up to $16.7 billion in settlements to US states and implement significant changes to teenage users’ interactions with the platforms, the tech company announced in a court filing Wednesday.
The settlement would effectively conclude a long trial against the tech company.
The case was brought by a coalition of 29 US states, which accused Meta of deliberately designing its platforms to keep young users engaged, misleading the public about potential risks and illegally collecting personal data from children under the age of 13.
If approved, the settlement would resolve the states’ claims against Meta while introducing new limits aimed at protecting teenagers on its platforms.
