Ronaldo’s World Cup journey ends as Spain beat Portugal to reach Last Eight
Mikel Merino scored a late stoppage-time winner for Spain against Portugal in a heavyweight 2026 World Cup round-of-16 match at Dallas with Spain beating Portugal 1-0.
While Spain failed to get good scoring opportunities in a defensive second-half match, Merino scored a low finish past Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa from a pass by Ferran Torres in the 91st minute.
It is noteworthy that this is the exact same result for Spain at this stage of the competition when they beat Portugal 1-0 in the 2010 World Cup as well. As a result of this win, Spain advance to the quarter-finals and their next opponent will be either the United States or Belgium.
The defeat also marks the end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup career as he said before the 2026 World Cup that this will be his last tournament.
