Flamingos make history, beat Brazil 3-1 to reach First U-17 Women’s World Cup final
The Nigerian team, known as the Flamingos, has qualified for their first-ever FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup final after beating their Brazilian opponents 3-1 in a semi-final match on Wednesday in Morocco.
In the second half of the game, the Nigerian team was outstanding enough to clinch the victory, with Queen Joseph scoring one goal and Awawu Bashiru scoring two goals.
After a goalless first half, Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, finishing off an assist from Oluwakemi Adegubyi to give Nigeria the lead.
The Flamingos doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Bashiru found the net, with Joseph providing the assist.
Bashiru completed her brace in the 80th minute, converting a pass from Oluebube Umejiaku to put Nigeria firmly in control of the encounter.
Brazil managed to pull one back in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, but the consolation goal came too late to prevent Nigeria from securing a memorable 3-1 victory.
The result sends the Flamingos into their first-ever final of the competition, surpassing their previous best performance at the tournament. Nigeria finished third at the 2022 edition in India after losing in the semi-finals.
The victory also marks a historic achievement for African football, with Nigeria becoming the first African nation to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria will face Japan in Saturday’s final after the Asian side defeated defending champions DPR Korea on penalties in the other semi-final.
The final is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, in Morocco, as the Flamingos seek to make further history by winning the tournament for the first time.
