A community vigilante group member, Divine Dung Davou, has been shot dead by armed men in an assault on Rachas Village in Heipang District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The assault reportedly took place at about 12:30am on Tuesday when Davou was on duty and guarding the community in order to protect the inhabitants from any security challenges.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as a member of the local community security group.

The killing has raised fresh concerns over the safety of local vigilante members involved in efforts to protect communities against armed attacks in Plateau State.

In a statement, Tengwong said the killing had plunged the victim’s family and residents of the community into mourning.

He also expressed concern over the continued exposure of rural communities to attacks, calling on the Plateau State Police Command and other security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
