INEC gives parties three extra days to submit candidates
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shifted the deadline for the submission of the list of candidates by political parties for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections by three days.
INEC stated that the deadline, which was initially supposed to end on July 11, 2026, Saturday, is now extended till midnight on July 14, 2026, Tuesday.
This disclosure was made by INEC in a statement released on Sunday and signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
INEC noted that the decision of extending the deadline was due to the appeal made by Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on behalf of political parties who failed to upload their list of candidates within the prescribed period.
“The decision to extend was based on an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council, on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline,” the statement read.
INEC said the extension demonstrates its commitment to ensuring inclusiveness in the electoral process while operating within the provisions of the law.
The commission urged all political parties to take advantage of the additional period to complete the submission of their candidates’ details before the new deadline.
“The Commission enjoins political parties to take advantage of this window of opportunity and ensure that all necessary details are uploaded before the expiration of the new deadline,” the statement added.
