Spain end Argentina’s title defence with 1-0 World Cup final win
The Spanish team emerged as winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 in extra-time in a nerve-wracking final, as the goal from Ferran Torres secured a second-ever world title for La Roja.
La Roja controlled the match for much of the time, but failed to break through the defenses of Argentina due to some incredible saves made by the Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
However, Argentina had a tough luck in stoppage time when Enzo Fernández was shown a red card, earning his second yellow card due to a dangerous foul on the Spanish defender Pau Cubarsí.
Spain was able to get themselves over the line through Ferran Torres in the 106th minute who found space for a header from Nico Williams before blasting past Martínez.
Earlier in the game, Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal came close for Spain while Williams also had a goal chalked off in extra-time after Mikel Merino fouled Nicolás Otamendi during his appearance off the bench.
Although there was a valiant effort from Martínez, Argentina could not fight back despite coming back against Egypt and England previously in the knockout stages.
This final, which took place in New Jersey, also saw the debut of the FIFA World Cup half-time show, where Madonna and Justin Bieber performed for 27 minutes while United States President, Donald Trump, watched on in attendance. This win means that Spain have now won the FIFA World Cup twice, defeating the reigning world champions, Argentina.
