Trump’s Letter: Ted Cruz says Tinubu is occupied with US lobbying efforts

American Senator Ted Cruz has alleged that the government of President Bola Tinubu is more preoccupied with lobbying in Washington rather than dealing with the issue of persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

According to his claim, Cruz has said in a statement made on Wednesday that the Nigerian government authorities have spent their efforts on lobbying Americans instead of attending to the grievances that have been raised by American authorities.

He has claimed that rather than paying attention to the issues raised by American authorities, the Nigerian government has been countering these allegations through public relations.

Recall that Cruz recently introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, 2025, a proposed legislation that seeks to impose sanctions on Nigerian government officials found to be facilitating the killing of Christians or enforcing laws that infringe on religious freedom, including certain blasphemy-related provisions.

According to the senator, Nigerian authorities have created conditions that encourage violence against Christians and other religious minorities by permitting the enforcement of blasphemy and Sharia-related laws while failing to adequately confront attacks by jihadist groups.

“The US government knows the Nigerian officials responsible for these policies. I have been pushing my bill to sanction them, and President Trump has even ordered military action,” Cruz said.

He further alleged that the Nigerian government remains confident it can maintain the current approach despite growing international criticism, while expressing satisfaction with President Donald Trump’s response to allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has consistently rejected claims that insecurity in the country is driven by religious persecution, maintaining that security challenges are largely criminal and insurgency-related and that efforts are ongoing to combat terrorism, banditry and other forms of violent crime across the country.
