Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has plunged into mourning after the untimely death of a fourth-year medical student, Adewole Emmanuel, who allegedly collapsed only minutes prior to his final session examination.

According to the statement issued by the Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA), Adewole, a student of OAU’s College of Health Sciences, was about to take one of his vital examinations when the shocking accident happened. He had lost his life when he was just a few days away from graduating from the university.

The sad news came to light in a statement made on Thursday, April 22, 2026. IFUMSA described Adewole as an enthusiastic and committed student who was suddenly taken away from the university when he was just a step away from achieving his lifelong dream.

Announcing the development, the association described the deceased as a promising student whose sudden death has left colleagues devastated.

“Under the cover of dark clouds, we write to you with the heaviest of hearts to inform you of the passing of one of our own, an integral part of the association and a solid pillar of his class,” the statement read.

IFUMSA further portrayed Emmanuel as “a colleague, friend, roommate, and a Part 4 medical student with an undeniably bright future until the time of his passing.”

“This incident is not only sad, but crucially painful as we lost a rising star and a loving member of the IFUMSA family,” the statement added.

The association appealed to the public to refrain from speculations surrounding the cause of death, urging respect for the bereaved family.

“In honoring his dearest memories, we kindly ask the general public to do without speculations and respect the privacy of the family during this vulnerable period,” it said.

A senior member of the association, who spoke with TheCable Newspaper on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation, disclosed that the student had shown no prior signs of illness before the incident.

“He died yesterday. He hadn’t been sick. He just collapsed and couldn’t be resuscitated,” the source said.

“We were about to ‘write’ (take) our final exam for the session. While waiting at the college, he suddenly collapsed and died. It’s just unfortunate, especially as he had no known underlying medical condition. We have contacted his family already.”
