Tragedy in Niger as five farmers die in canoe accident
Five farmers, made up of four men and one woman, are believed dead after the canoe carrying them to their farmland sank in River Kuji, in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger.
This was revealed by Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in Minna on Monday.
The statement says that the accident happened in the morning of Saturday, Aug. 15, when the victims went from Shaba Woshi village to their farmland on the other side of the river.
The victims were identified as Yahaya Abubakar, Usman Abubakar, Lamin Hussaini, Baba Ahmadu and Salihu Aliyu, who are all inhabitants of Shaba Woshi village.
Baba-Arah noted that the victims travelled from the village to Katcha, where they boarded the canoe in order to cross River Kuji to reach their farmland before the canoe sank.
It was stated that this accident has put the whole community in mourning, noting that efforts are being made to get to the root of the matter.
