FG declares June 12 public holiday for Democracy Day celebration
A public holiday has been officially designated by the Federal Government for the celebration of Democracy Day on Friday, June 12, 2026, in Nigeria.
This news has been communicated by the Minister of Interior of Nigeria on behalf of the Nigerian government in a public notice issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior of Nigeria.
According to a statement released by Dr. Magdalene Ajani on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, it is clear that the day of June 12 holds special significance in the history of the development of democracy in Nigeria, inasmuch as it serves to celebrate the brave, resilient, and sacrifice-laden citizens who played a key role in establishing democracy in Nigeria.
The Minister expressed the Federal Government’s continued dedication to the principles of democracy, such as the rule of law, accountability, inclusivity, and transparency.
It is pertinent to note that the statement reiterates the need to ensure security as part of democratic sustenance in Nigeria. According to the statement, all necessary measures will be put in place to safeguard lives and properties in Nigeria.
