Former West Brom Star Quevin Castro dies after collapsing during match

Quevin Castro, who once played for West Bromwich Albion as a midfielder, has passed away at the young age of 25 years old after he collapsed in a preseason match played in Portugal.

The incident occurred in a friendly match where Castro was playing for Portuguese club Real Sport Clube against a top division club named Estrela da Amadora in Portugal on Saturday in the Estádio das Seixas.

Despite receiving immediate medical attention from the staff, Castro later died.

The young midfielder had previously played for West Bromwich Albion before continuing his career in Portugal. His death has shocked the football community, with tributes expected from clubs, teammates and fans.

The Lisbon Football Association confirmed Castro’s death in a statement, while Real Sport Clube described him as much more than a player and an integral member of the club’s family.

The match was subsequently brought to an end following the tragedy.

West Brom said they were “devastated” by the news.

The Championship club will honour Castro before Sunday’s match against Burnley with a period of applause in the 25th minute and players wearing black armbands.

Castro joined West Brom in 2021 after impressing during a trial and made his first-team debut against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup. He later made a Championship appearance against Swansea City.

He subsequently spent time on loan with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead before joining York City in 2023. He also represented several other English clubs before returning to Portugal.

Castro had celebrated his 25th birthday just six days before his death.

His former clubs and colleagues have paid tribute to the midfielder, with Estrela da Amadora expressing their deepest condolences to Castro’s family, friends and everyone at Real Sport Clube.

The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.
