The people of Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State were sent into a state of panic following reports of an attack that saw the Emir’s palace burned down and several people kidnapped.

It was reported that the attack took place over the weekend when a group of heavily armed assailants attacked the community from all directions, shooting randomly and causing fear among the residents before proceeding with their nefarious intentions.

As part of the raid, it was reported that the Emir’s palace was torched, leading to extensive damage. It was also stated that a number of people were kidnapped, among them some women, children, and some of the Emir’s wives.

In a statement made to the press, it was reported that during the attack, several people were kidnapped, while other properties and homes were also torched.

Yashikira is a border town located in the Baruten Local Government Area which has experienced numerous attacks in the past due to its proximity to border towns.

Sources stated that the assailants managed to overpower the local vigilantes and remained unchallenged by anyone during their lengthy operations as the residents ran to safety in nearby shrubs.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen initially stormed the palace, setting some parts of it ablaze and abducting several people.

“Bandits invaded Yashikira in the night. They set the palace on fire and kidnapped women and children, including the Emir’s wives,” a resident told this newspaper.

Another source said the attack threw the entire community into confusion as families searched for missing relatives after the assailants left the area.

“The attackers came in large numbers with sophisticated weapons. People were running in different directions. Many residents escaped into the bush while the bandits carried away several persons,” the source said.

The insecurity was said to be on the rise in the community, with residents accusing groups of attacking people living in the communities in Baruten LGA because of the open pathways in the region.

Residents accused the security agencies for failing to give enough protection in spite of previous warnings about banditry in the area.

As at the time when this report was filed, it was not yet known how many victims were kidnapped since the official statement was not yet made.
