England overcome Croatia in six-goal World Cup thriller
The English squad got off to a dream start at the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament by emerging victorious against Croatia in a Group L clash in Dallas to secure all three points on offer.
During the exciting, goal-filled and dramatic clash, the Three Lions were impressive on the offensive side of things but were guilty of defensive mistakes, giving the Croats something to cheer about during the game.
In the 12th minute of the match, captain Harry Kane opened the scoring for England when he scored a penalty kick after Croatia captain Luka Modric fouled England’s Noni Madueke in the box.
While goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had kept out Kane’s shot first time around, he was penalized for leaving his goal before Kane took the penalty kick for the first time.
In response, Croatia leveled the score in the 36th minute when Martin Baturina produced a thunderbolt of a shot that eluded Jordan Pickford despite him touching the ball.
England quickly moved into the lead once again through Kane who netted with a well-taken header from a corner by Declan Rice three minutes before the halftime whistle. The scoreline took special significance since it tied Kane with former English international striker Gary Lineker, both of whom have scored 10 goals at the World Cup finals. Furthermore, Kane became the first Englishman to surpass the 80-goal mark in his international career.
But then came another moment of inspiration by Croatia when Ivan Perisic played a cross which Petar Musa converted past Pickford to bring the scores level again, making it 2-2 on the stroke of halftime.
England gained control soon after the interval with an effort by Jude Bellingham.
The initiative swung decidedly in favor of the English when the Three Lions took control of possession and started creating chances.
It was substitute Marcus Rashford who ensured an English win just moments before the final whistle when he converted calmly to seal a deserved win for England after an impressive debut in the World Cup.
While the victory will certainly boost the morale of Tuchel and his team, questions are likely to be raised by the manner in which the English conceded two goals against the Croatians who looked lethal on the counter.
However, it will please England to register a win in their first Group L match of the World Cup ahead of their next match against Ghana in Boston.
England will be happy as Kane already has a goal for himself in the tournament and Bellingham continues to make a mark on the game at the highest level.
