There is a huge political gain recorded for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ogun State after 13,000 members and supporters of different political parties decided to defect to join their party.

The 13,000 people who have decided to defect to join NDC comprises of about 3,000 registered members and 10,000 supporters of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and the former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, according to the chairman of the NDC Ogun State, Femi Alao.

Speaking to the journalists in Abeokuta, Alao said the defection has been largely triggered by the defection of Obi and Kwankwaso to NDC.

“The defection has largely been inspired by the defection of Obi and Kwankwaso,” he said.

It should be mentioned that the defectors come from the All Progressives Congress, the People’s Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

“About 3,000 people and 10,000 supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso have left their former political parties such as PDP, APC, ADC and NNPP to join the NDC because of the defection of Obi and Kwankwaso to our party. They are now duly registered members of the NDC,” he said.

He described the development as “a tremendous defection” while pointing out that there were other high profile politicians who had been planning to defect to the party.

He explained that there was a known member of the APC and a former senator representing Ogun West who is set to formally defect to the NDC.

In his view, the politician was interested in having a good political structure as well as providing his followers with an opportunity within the party.

Alao equally stated that there was no way the NDC was going to enter into any form of merger arrangement before the 2027 general elections.

He asked the newly acquired members to work closely with the structures of the party to ensure that the NDC develops at the grassroots level.

The NDC chairman further condemned the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for insecurity and economic challenges which pointed to the need for Nigerians to have another political direction.

He further maintained that the NDC is still the most credible political party in Nigeria ahead of 2027 general elections.
