The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the release of the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

This announcement came through a statement signed by the acting director of information and public relations of the council, Mr Azeez Sani, on Thursday.

According to the statement, a total number of 186,291 candidates wrote the exam, which had 12 subjects.

More information about the performance of the candidates could not be gathered in the statement.

‎In his statement, Sani disclosed that the candidates who took the examination came from the 36 states of the federation, FCT, and five other countries outside Nigeria.

‎Sani said the examination took place from April 20 to April 30, 2026.

‎The release of these results took place after the successful conduct of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting, which was organized at the NECO secretariat in Minna, Niger State.

‎According to him, the award committee was headed by the minister of education, Dr Tunji Alausa, represented by the director of basic education, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folake Olatunji-David.

He further pointed out that the meeting of the award committee was also graced with the presence of secondary school principals nationwide and some members of NECO management.

Sani revealed that the committee equally resolved to conduct the resit examination for the BECE in mathematics and English studies on July 22 and July 23, 2026.

‎According to him, the resit examination is to cater to those candidates who had conditional deficiency in either mathematics, English studies, or both.

However, he added that the examination will offer candidates the chance to correct the deficiency and get the certificate needed to gain admission into SSS I without repeating the whole year. (NAN)
