Kano Postpones Mass wedding after screening reveals some brides are pregnant
Kano State Government has rescheduled their proposed mass wedding program following a routine medical checkup that revealed that some of the ladies selected were pregnant.
This was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of the Kano State AIDS Control Agency (KSACA) who is Dr. Usman Bashir while speaking to reporters on the results of the medical checkup of those chosen for the program.
Central Post Nigeria reports that the Kano State Government has set aside N1.5billion for the program where 1, 500 couples will be married off.
It was part of the plan of the government to conduct thorough medical checkup to ensure that all couples met the required health standards prior to their marriage.
The medical checkup was done in conjunction with the Kano State Hisbah Board. It involved testing for pregnancy, HIV, and other important health checks.
Dr. Bashir said that some of the selected ladies found to be pregnant led to the postponement of the mass wedding program.
“The decision to postpone the exercise followed the outcome of the medical screening, which showed that some of the prospective brides were pregnant,” he said.
Dr. Bashir pointed out that the screening was meant to safeguard the health of the couples and any future children they might have due to any illnesses that might need to be treated prior to the marriage.
Bashir said that pre-marriage health screening is still an important part of the mass wedding program because it will help identify health issues ahead of time and take necessary action and provide adequate medical advice.
On the other hand, the Kano State government has opened the application process to those who have already applied and failed to make it to the list for the program. This was to ensure that the applicants can now be included in the rescheduled program.
So far, there is no date that has been set for the mass wedding program.
