FG renames Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in honour of Tinubu

The Federal Government has named the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The news broke yesterday when the Minister of Works, David Umahi, gave a press release on the ongoing development project.

Umahi said that this was done by the leadership and management of the Federal Ministry of Works in appreciation for President Tinubu’s contribution in initiating the project years back before he took office.

The minister said that Tinubu conceived the project about 27 years back.

“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and in consultation with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, the directors and the entire staff of the ministry, we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Umahi said.

Describing the project as a long-standing dream of the President, the minister added:

“This is a dream that Mr President had about 27 years ago.”

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the Tinubu administration. Spanning approximately 750 kilometres, the highway is expected to connect several coastal states across southern Nigeria.

The Federal Government has consistently described the project as a strategic economic corridor designed to improve transportation, boost trade, create jobs and unlock new opportunities for businesses and tourism along the nation’s coastline.

Estimated to cost about ₦15 trillion upon completion, construction is currently ongoing across several sections of the highway, with one of the early segments nearing completion.

Since work commenced in March 2024, the project has attracted widespread public attention. While supporters have hailed it as a transformative infrastructure initiative, critics have questioned its cost, procurement process and the demolition of structures along parts of the route.

Despite the controversy, the Federal Government has maintained that the coastal highway is a critical investment aimed at enhancing national connectivity and driving long-term economic growth.

The renaming of the highway further strengthens its association with President Tinubu’s legacy infrastructure agenda.
