2027: Unclear path for Shettima as Tinubu delays running mate decision

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had no difficulties in obtaining the APC ticket for the 2027 presidential race, in stark comparison to the tough internal struggle he had undergone in 2022.

Whereas he had contested with several other strong party members such as former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and former Governor of Rivers State Rotimi Amaechi, the present one proved very simple as no one in particular could even dare stand up against him and oppose him in whatever way possible.

In fact, no one should have had the nerve to even confront him spiritually or physically in trying to obtain the party ticket. With this, it remains to be seen if he will retain his deputy or not.

There were some forms of resistance when Tinubu chose Shettima as his vice presidential candidate in 2022. It mainly stemmed from the delicate balance of religious sects in the country.

Both Tinubu and Shettima practice Islam, and religious balance was made a very important factor, especially amid rumors of efforts to make Nigeria an Islamic state. However, as the general election approaches in 2027 and Tinubu gets the party’s ticket, signs have shown that the former president may contest with his deputy by his side. Some political commentators referred to him as one of the most loyal deputies in almost three decades of democratic rule in Nigeria.

The vice president, according to the commentators, is capable of interpreting and understanding the policies and programs of the Tinubu-led administration without any form of confrontation or conflict.

One can only say that he seems to have observed his boss so well that he knew how to serve him best.

Loyalty is another advantage that Shettima has over other candidates.

Loyalty should be absolute in politics; the moment there is an indication of doubt, problems arise.

Shettima does not seem to have made any mistakes that could make him lose Tinubu’s trust.

The problem of a same-faith ticket (Muslim/Muslim) has also died out, considering the fact that First Lady and Senator Oluremi Tinubu is a Christian and a pastor of the Redeemed Church.

Islamization cannot work in favor of Shettima given the influence of Mrs. Tinubu within the political circles.

A seasoned political strategist like Tinubu knows well that it will be suicidal for him to sack Shettima at such a crucial period in politics where it all boils down to numbers.

He certainly has his followers willing to die for him.

On the other hand, there is also noted the cordial relationship between Mrs Tinubu and the wife of the vice president, Hajia Nana Shettima.

First Lady of the country has established the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). This organization has had positive influences on the lives of women and girls.

Hajia Nana Shettima is the national vice-chairman of RHI and frequently attends to activities of this organization in different states on behalf of First Lady.

It may seem that in spite of intrigue and political manipulations, it will be highly unexpected for Tinubu to give up Shettima.

However, politics knows no impossibility
