With Emmanuel Nwabuikwu Nnorom announced as the Chairman designate of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, a new era has dawned in the operations of one of the leading financial entities in Africa.

Nnorom, an esteemed banker, chartered accountant, and corporate leader with over four decades of industry experience, will take his seat in the capacity from 21 August 2026, taking over from renowned businessman and philanthropist, Tony O. Elumelu, who is stepping down after having reached the 12-year tenure limit for non-executive directors, set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

It is clear that his appointment heralds a further commitment to the tradition of excellence in corporate governance, strategy leadership, and pan-Africanism which has characterized UBA Plc in its operations. With years of experience working in various executive capacities in the company before being appointed as a Non-Executive Director, it is not all strange ground for Nnorom.

A seasoned banker with over four decades of experience

Born on April 7, 1958, Emmanuel Nnorom is known for having made himself very famous in Nigeria’s banking, investment, and corporate worlds.

He has shown his mastery of financial management, enterprise risk management, corporate governance, investment strategies, and business transformation in all his professional life.

While most corporate executives have stayed throughout their working lives in only one sector, Nnorom has succeeded in managing companies in banking, hospitality, power production, energy, insurance, health care, and real estate.

Thus, he can be considered one of Nigeria’s top corporate executives.

Early career at KPMG

Nnorom began his professional journey with KPMG, one of the world’s leading audit and professional services firms.

His years at KPMG laid the foundation for his career in finance and corporate leadership.

Working as an auditor exposed him to diverse industries while strengthening his expertise in:

  • Financial reporting
  • Corporate accounting
  • Internal controls
  • Audit procedures
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Corporate governance

During this period, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant, a milestone that would later become instrumental in his rise within Nigeria’s banking industry.

Journey into banking

After he left KPMG, Emmanuel Nnorom worked at Standard Trust Bank (STB), which was one of the most rapidly growing financial organizations in Nigeria.

A turning point in his career happened in 2005, when STB merged with United Bank for Africa (UBA), thus forming one of the biggest banking groups in Africa.

Instead of just adjusting to the merger, Nnorom became one of the managers who influenced its outcome.

Rise through the ranks at UBA

Over the years, Nnorom occupied several strategic positions within UBA, steadily climbing the corporate ladder through performance and leadership.

Some of the key positions he held include:

Group Chief Operating Officer

As Group COO, he supervised banking operations across multiple business units while driving operational efficiency and service delivery.

Executive Director, Finance

In this role, he oversaw the bank’s financial management, budgeting, capital planning, and financial reporting.

Executive Director, Risk Management

Managing risk became increasingly important as UBA expanded across Africa.

Nnorom led enterprise-wide risk management strategies designed to strengthen the bank’s resilience and regulatory compliance.

Managing Director/CEO, UBA Africa

Perhaps one of his most significant roles was serving as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.

This position placed him in charge of banking operations across 18 African countries, where he played a central role in implementing UBA’s ambitious pan-African strategy.

His responsibilities included:

  • Expanding banking operations across Africa
  • Driving business growth
  • Integrating newly established subsidiaries
  • Strengthening governance frameworks
  • Developing local leadership teams
  • Enhancing customer experience across African markets

His leadership helped reinforce UBA’s reputation as one of Africa’s truly pan-African financial institutions.

Appointment to UBA Board

In April 2024, Emmanuel Nnorom joined the Board of Directors of United Bank for Africa Plc as a Non-Executive Director.

The appointment reflected the confidence the bank had in his extensive institutional knowledge and leadership experience.

Only two years later, UBA announced that he would become its next Chairman following Tony Elumelu’s retirement.

His appointment takes effect on 21 August 2026.

Taking over from Tony Elumelu

Replacing Tony Elumelu is no ordinary task.

Elumelu transformed UBA into one of Africa’s most recognizable banking brands during his years of leadership.

Under his chairmanship, UBA:

  • Expanded into over 20 African countries
  • Strengthened digital banking
  • Increased profitability
  • Enhanced corporate governance
  • Grew its international presence
  • Became one of Africa’s leading financial institutions

Nnorom is therefore expected to build on this strong foundation while steering the bank through emerging opportunities in digital finance, cross-border banking, financial inclusion, and sustainable growth.

His deep understanding of UBA’s operations is expected to ensure a seamless leadership transition.

Leadership beyond banking

While many know him for his banking achievements, Emmanuel Nnorom has also distinguished himself in Nigeria’s corporate sector.

President and CEO of Transcorp

Between 2014 and 2017, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp).

At Transcorp, he supervised investments spanning:

  • Hospitality
  • Power generation
  • Agriculture
  • Energy

During his tenure, he focused on improving operational performance while positioning the conglomerate for long-term growth.

Group CEO of Heirs Holdings

In June 2017, Emmanuel Nnorom became the Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, one of Africa’s leading investment companies.

Founded by Tony Elumelu, Heirs Holdings has investments in:

  • Financial services
  • Power
  • Energy
  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality
  • Insurance
  • Technology
  • Real estate

Today, the investment group operates in more than 20 countries.

As Group CEO, Nnorom oversees the strategic direction of the organisation while managing one of Africa’s most diversified investment portfolios.

Championing Africapitalism

One of the philosophies closely associated with Heirs Holdings is Africapitalism.

The concept, popularised by Tony Elumelu, advocates long-term investments by Africa’s private sector as the engine for the continent’s economic transformation.

Under Nnorom’s leadership, Heirs Holdings has continued investing in sectors capable of creating jobs, improving infrastructure, and supporting economic development.

His leadership aligns closely with this philosophy by promoting sustainable investments rather than short-term profit.

Corporate governance expertise

Over the years, Emmanuel Nnorom has built an outstanding reputation as a governance expert.

He currently serves on the boards of several companies across different industries.

His board appointments include:

  • Chairman, Transcorp Hotels Plc
  • Chairman, Afriland Properties Plc
  • Director of several companies within the Heirs Holdings Group

His boardroom experience spans banking, insurance, hospitality, healthcare, energy, and real estate.

This breadth of experience is expected to further strengthen UBA’s governance structure.

Professional qualifications

Nnorom possesses impressive academic and professional credentials.

He is a Fellow of:

  • Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)
  • Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN)

Interestingly, he was a prize-winning student during his ICAN professional examinations before later attaining fellowship status.

He also completed executive leadership programmes at Templeton College, University of Oxford, now known as Green Templeton College.

These qualifications have complemented his practical leadership experience throughout his career.

Leadership style

Those who have worked with Emmanuel Nnorom often describe him as:

  • Strategic
  • Disciplined
  • Ethical
  • Results-driven
  • Calm under pressure
  • Focused on long-term growth

Throughout his career, organisations under his leadership have strengthened governance structures, improved operational efficiency, expanded investments, and delivered sustainable business growth.

His leadership philosophy places strong emphasis on integrity, accountability, innovation, and disciplined execution.

Contributions beyond business

Beyond the corporate world, Emmanuel Nnorom has contributed to national development through entrepreneurship, youth empowerment, and philanthropy.

Working alongside Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he has supported initiatives promoting:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Youth empowerment
  • Healthcare
  • Economic development
  • Infrastructure
  • Job creation

These programmes have empowered thousands of young Africans to build businesses and create employment opportunities across the continent.

Personal life

Outside his professional life, Emmanuel Nnorom is recognized for his devout Christian religion.

In the Presbyterian Church, he is an elder who still takes part in church activities and those within the community.

He is married and father to some kids.

Despite having attained the very important corporate positions in Nigeria, he has always been noted for his humility and professionalism.

A new era for UBA

Emmanuel Nnorom, taking up the post as Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc, is expected by industry analysts to be ushering the bank into yet another important era of its growth and development.

He is a man well equipped with all the attributes necessary to steer the board in an era of unprecedented transformation within Africa’s banking sector.

Whereas Tony Elumelu will go down as one who has made great contributions to the growth of the bank, Nnorom has taken over from him a solidly performing and profitable company that can still grow.

Nnorom will ensure the continuity of the vision of the company while at the same time ensuring that the company continues growing further.

With over forty years of executive experience in diverse fields including banking and diversified investment management, Nnorom is expected to provide the necessary guidance to maintain the status of UBA as one of Africa’s top companies for many years to come.
