Many feared trapped as Kano building collapses, 16 rescued

The Kano state fire service has managed to pull out 16 people following the collapse of a building in Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge LGA of the state.

A number of people are still feared buried under the rubble, reports indicate.

According to Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the fire service, the collapsed building was approximately 20 by 30 feet and collapsed on Saturday morning.

Abdullahi said the fire service received a distress call at around 4:32 am in the morning and dispatched personnel from their headquarters to the site.

According to Abdullahi, the team pulled out 16 people from under the rubble, including three unconscious children.

The three children rescued were Affan Yusuf (five years old), Hassana Yusuf (seven years old), and Ummulkursum Yusuf (nine months).

“The Kano State Fire Service wishes to inform the general public that at about 4:32 am today, Saturday, 8 August 2026, the Service’s Emergency Response Unit received an emergency call from one of our staff, Aminu Sani Warure, reporting the collapse of a building at Dan Dishe, Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area,” the statement reads.

“Upon receiving the report, men of the Service from the Headquarters were immediately mobilized to the scene. On arrival, they discovered that a residential building of about 20 × 30 ft had collapsed.”

Abdullahi said the cause of the collapse was unknown and an investigation was ongoing.

“The Kano State Fire Service urges members of the public to observe all necessary safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent similar incidents,” it added.

The incident comes less than a month after one person died and three others were rescued when a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Nasarawa LGA of the state.
