Mbappe fires France past Senegal in World Cup opener
France started off their pursuit of a third FIFA World Cup trophy on a high after beating Senegal 3-1 in an exciting Group I match on Tuesday.
Leading the way for the hosts were French skipper Kylian Mbappe, a star player at Real Madrid, who netted twice as France claimed their vital first win to show why they are amongst the favorites for the competition.
The French star proved once again what makes him one of the best players on the international stage with another outstanding performance which proved too difficult for the Senegalese backline to contain.
By netting two goals, Mbappe helped his country secure an important three points while also inching closer to reaching a significant milestone at the FIFA World Cup. Mbappe, who is currently 27 years old, took his World Cup tally to 14 goals after this match, thereby placing him only two goals behind Germany legend Miroslav Klose, who still holds the record for scoring the most number of goals at the FIFA World Cup with 16 goals.
The French team started the game confidently and gained an upper hand over Senegal, who were equally determined and ready to pull off another upset in the World Cup.
Mbappe then finally broke the deadlock and used his signature pace and finishing skills to give a lead to former World Cup winners. France then continued to dominate the game and extended their lead with a very good attack from the French side.
Nonetheless, Senegal refused to throw in the towel and managed to chip away the lead a little bit and raised hopes of coming back with their fans.
However, France proved why they are superior in the game and gave them a breather again by scoring another goal through Bradley Barcola. France sealed the deal later on in the game when Mbappe got his second goal, giving them a comfortable victory over their opponents.
Moreover, the result of this match is quite important for France because they finally won against Senegal in a World Cup match after their match in the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and Japan.
