Super Falcons suffer historic World Cup blow after defeat to South Africa
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been denied access to the next phase of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification play-offs due to their loss against South Africa.
Nigeria squared off against South Africa in a critical play-off match of WAFCON, with the winner anticipated to progress to the intercontinental play-offs.
There were two spots available, which saw four teams that were eliminated from the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) contesting the two spots.
Ghana had earlier booked one of the two spots following their victory against Côte d’Ivoire.
The defeat means that the Super Falcons will not make it to the next phase of the qualification process, thus ruling themselves out of making it to the 2027 Women’s World Cup via the play-offs.
