University of Abuja names new Registrar, Librarian

The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly known as University of Abuja) has approved the appointment of Mr. Alkasim Musa Umar as the Substantive Registrar and Ms. Rose Lade Mommoh as the Substantive University Librarian.

The appointments were made during the 101st meeting of the Governing Council, held on 9th and 10th July, 2026 under the chairmanship of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso.

The appointments become effective from 9th July, 2026.

According to the university, the Registrar and University Librarian will each serve for a one-off period of five years as per the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act and University Regulations.

Reacting to their appointments, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi was optimistic that the new Registrars will improve the administration of the university and its library.

“The wealth of experience that these two appointees bring will further strengthen our commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, research, innovation and community service.

“Their appointments come at a critical time in our journey as we continue to reposition Yakubu Gowon University as a globally competitive institution. I look forward to working closely with them as we realise the strategic vision of our great university and take the institution to even greater heights,” he said.

Prior to his appointment, Umar had worked as Deputy Registrar and was until recently the Director of the Institute of Education where he oversaw the administration and registry operations, credentials checking and secretariat services to the board of management of the institute.

Umar is a product of the University of Maiduguri. He has a B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in Business Administration and also professional certificates from the Digital Bridge Institute and Souters of United Kingdom.

Prior to coming to the Registry of the University, he worked with the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron. At the Registry of the University, he has been working for 17 years in different strategic departments which include Academic Affairs, Establishment, TETFund Desk Office and Faculty Officer of Faculties of Education and Agriculture.

He has also been a member of many university committees such as the Undergraduate Admission Committee, Senate Committee on Core Curriculum-Minimum Academic Standards, University Portal Committee and Vice-Chancellor Handing Over Committee.

In 2024, he attended international fora on behalf of the university in Kenya, Netherlands and Japan.

Dr Rose Lade Mommoh was recently appointed as the University Librarian and started working at the university in 1999 as a Graduate Librarian before becoming Deputy University Librarian and Associate Professor in 2020.

Dr Rose Lade Mommoh obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from the University of Maiduguri, Master’s degree in Library Science from Bayero University, Kano and PhD in Information Science from the University of Maiduguri.

With over 25 years of experience in university librarianship, Dr Rose Lade Mommoh has occupied various positions at the university library such as Head of Circulation Unit, Collection Development and Readers’ Services at the Engineering Library.

Prior to being appointed as a University Librarian, Dr Rose Lade Mommoh was the Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Library and Information Science.

Dr Rose Lade Mommoh has authored numerous scholarly articles in the area of library and information science and she has delivered presentations in local and international conferences including China and Poland.

Dr Rose Lade Mommoh is a registered member of the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria and the Nigerian Library Association.
