2027: ‘I will restore fuel subsidy if elected president’ — Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, who was once the vice-president and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has vowed to reinstate the fuel subsidy if he wins the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

According to Atiku, the abolition of the fuel subsidy by the government of President Bola Tinubu has not achieved the desired results for the people of Nigeria.

The end of the fuel subsidy was declared by President Tinubu on the day of his inauguration on May 29, 2023, an action that caused the price of petrol to shoot up significantly and made things even harder for the people.

Since then, the hike in the price of fuel has resulted in increased transport fares and cost of food, goods and services.

Atiku maintained that the subsidy removal has placed a heavy burden on Nigerians without delivering meaningful economic gains to the country.

He therefore pledged that, if elected in 2027, his administration would review the policy and reinstate the fuel subsidy regime to ease the economic hardship facing citizens.

Nevertheless, the current administration maintains that it has since increased monthly allocations to states and initiated infrastructure projects across the nation.

Despite having previously endorsed the removal of the fuel subsidy, Atiku Abubakar contends that it has not served the interests of the populace.

“I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?” He said in an interview on social media.

“If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money,” he added.

Atiku is hoping to defeat the incumbent President and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, and his former vice-presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who is the flag bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.
