23 foreigners arrested in Ogun over alleged Ponzi, visa fraud

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 23 foreigners believed to be involved in a supposed Ponzi scheme and visa scam in the Ota axis of the state.

This was revealed by DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, a spokesman for the command, through a statement released Monday in Abeokuta.

Babaseyi stated that the suspects were apprehended on August 4 at about 11am in a raid on a residential house conducted by operatives of the Atan-Ota Division.

He revealed that the raid was conducted based on information on the activities being carried out at the house.

The spokesman explained that the suspects were detained for investigation on the supposed Ponzi scheme and visa scam.

“The raid followed credible intelligence received by the police concerning suspected fraudulent activities at the location.

“The police personnel promptly mobilised, secured the premises and arrested the suspects for further investigation.

“23 foreign nationals were arrested in connection with alleged Ponzi scheme, visa scam and others immigration -related offences.

“After preliminary investigation, 21 of the suspects were formally handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service on August 5, for further immigration-related investigation and appropriate action,” he said. 

The spokesperson said that two suspects were retained by the police for prosecution in connection with Obtaining by False Pretence (OBT) and other related offences, subject to the conclusion of the investigation.

Babaseyi said the investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged fraudulent activities and identify any other persons connected with the scheme. (NAN)
