Suspected robber beaten to death by mob in Calabar

A young man whose identity could not be ascertained was beaten to death yesterday in Ikom Street Calabar for breaking into a building in the wee hours of Friday with intent to commit robbery.

The man allegedly attempted carnal knowledge against the woman resident in the building but she resisted.

She screamed in alarm which brought out neighbors in the adjacent building who also raised the alarm.

This happened at around 4.00 am as witnessed by many eye witnesses.

The residents managed to stop the suspect from running away and overpower him.

The man was dragged to the main Ikom Street and was first detained by the angry crowd.

After confessing to what he did, he was beaten to stupor.

“We wanted to wait for arrival of policemen but the suspect wanted to escape. This was why the angry neighbours descended on him with clubs, planks, irons mercilessly. He later he died,” the eyewitness said.

Police spokesman in the state, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said he would issue an official statement on the incident, adding that operatives are investigating the attempted robbery.
