Imam, 3 others killed as bandits abduct 12 residents in fresh Sokoto attack
A fresh wave of violence has hit Sokoto State after suspected bandits attacked Illelar Dawagware village in Goronyo Local Government Area, killing an Imam and three other residents while abducting at least 12 people.
The deadly assault, which reportedly occurred under the cover of darkness, has left the community in mourning and renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Nigeria’s North-West.
According to local sources, the heavily armed attackers invaded the village, firing sporadically and forcing residents to flee for safety. During the attack, the village Imam, a respected religious leader, was among four people who lost their lives.
The gunmen also kidnapped 12 residents before fleeing to an unknown destination, leaving families devastated and uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.
Residents described the incident as another tragic reminder of the persistent insecurity facing rural communities in Sokoto State, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, and killings have become increasingly common despite ongoing security operations.
The latest attack has heightened fear among villagers, many of whom have continued to call on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities from armed criminal groups.
Community leaders expressed sorrow over the loss of the victims, especially the Imam, whose death has created a deep sense of grief among residents. They also appealed for urgent intervention to secure the release of those abducted and prevent further attacks.
The incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks recorded across Sokoto and other North-West states, where banditry continues to pose a serious challenge to lives, livelihoods, and local economies.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released an official statement on the attack. However, residents remain hopeful that intensified security operations will lead to the rescue of the abducted victims and bring those responsible to justice.
