Kebbi: Lakurawa terrorists kill 2 soldiers, chinese national
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed two military personnel and a Chinese citizen while attacking construction workers in the Maiyama local government area of Kebbi State.
According to reports, the gunmen sneaked into Maiyama local government area from Kebbe local government area of the neighboring Sokoto State and launched a sudden attack on the workers on Thursday.
The incident reportedly occurred while the construction workers were carrying out their activities in the area.
The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the attack during a telephone interview.
Usman said the victims were among construction workers engaged on the Badagry Super Highway project in Kebbi State, adding that the two soldiers were providing security for the Chinese national and other workers when the attackers struck.
He said the attackers killed two soldiers and the Chinese national, while some other people sustained injuries.
“Yes, the attack occurred, but the terrorists are not from Kebbi State but infiltrated the state through a village with a border to Kebbi State,” Usman said.
He explained that the identities of the deceased soldiers could not be disclosed because they were military personnel and not members of the police.
The police spokesperson described the attack as barbaric and unwarranted, adding that joint security agencies had launched a manhunt for the suspected attackers.
He said security operatives were pursuing the suspected Lakurawa members responsible for the attack.
Lakurawa, a relatively new armed group reported to be operating around parts of north-western Nigeria and the Niger Republic border area, has previously been linked to attacks in the region.
