Man allegedly hacks mother to death with machete in Abia

A male of middle age, Livingston Nwakanma, is accused of murdering his mother using a machete in the Osaa Ukwu community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

The deceased woman who had been referred to as Nwaigbe Daa was preparing food in the kitchen when she was assaulted with a machete which resulted in a deadly stab on her neck.

A community source told Vanguard that Nwakanma had allegedly exhibited troubling behaviour for more than four years.

According to the source, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day when Nwakanma allegedly entered the kitchen, knocked his mother down and attacked her with the machete.

The source said a woman who saw Nwakanma wielding the weapon raised the alarm and confronted him, asking why he had attacked his mother.

The alarm reportedly attracted the attention of the deceased’s husband, who rushed to the scene.

However, Nwakanma had allegedly inflicted a fatal injury on his mother, who collapsed and died at the scene.

When her husband attempted to intervene, Nwakanma allegedly tried to attack him but the man escaped and raised the alarm.

Nwakanma was subsequently apprehended by youths in the community and handed over to the police.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Abia State, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the Eastern Ngwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call about the incident.

Chinaka said: “On arrival, officers met the macheted mother of the suspect, who was lifeless at the scene. A medical professional confirmed her death, and her body was deposited at the morgue.

“The suspect, who was about to be lynched by a mob, was swiftly rescued by the police and taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“He is currently in police custody, while investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
