Okpebholo: Petrol costs over ₦3,000/Litre in UK, Nigerians are enjoying

The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has supported the price of petroleum products in Nigeria because motorists in Nigeria pay less than their counterparts in the United Kingdom.

Governor Monday Okpebholo made the statement on Thursday during the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” in Edo State.

According to him, he had travelled to London the previous week and compared the prices of petrol at a petrol station in the UK and Nigeria.

“Nigerians are complaining about petrol price. I was in London last week at a filling station to compare fuel prices of Nigeria and UK. A litre of fuel costs over ₦3,000+ there in UK. We are enjoying here,” he said.

According to a report by The Punch, Okpebholo said the comparison convinced him that Nigerians were doing relatively well regarding petrol prices. He also praised President Bola Tinubu, saying the President was stabilising the economy.

The governor acknowledged that the ongoing economic reforms were difficult but expressed optimism that they would eventually yield results.

He likened the reforms to an aircraft taking off, saying passengers do not receive food until the plane reaches cruising altitude.

“Very soon Nigeria will be on a cruising level,” Okpebholo said.

His comments come amid continued public concerns over petrol prices and the cost of living following the removal of the petrol subsidy.

While the governor cited the UK price comparison in defending the current situation, the affordability of fuel in Nigeria remains a subject of public debate, particularly in relation to income levels and the wider cost of living.
