President Tinubu directs EFCC to restore access to Osun govt account

The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to lift the freeze order on the account held by the Osun State Government.

The President in a personally signed statement released on Thursday described himself as “deeply embarrassed” by the situation, not because the commission is doing its job under a court order, but because of the timing.

“Accordingly, I have directed the EFCC to immediately proceed to the court to vacate the order and discontinue whatever action it has instituted against the Osun State Government in this regard,” Tinubu said in the statement.

Tinubu noted that while the anti-graft agency has a duty to investigate alleged financial crimes, the decision to freeze the state’s account at this particular time was inappropriate and has therefore instructed the commission to take immediate steps to lift the restriction.
