TCN suspends power transmission to Niger after transmission tower collapse

The Nigerian Electricity Power Bulk Trader has halted the distribution of electricity to Niamey, Niger Republic through its 132kV Birnin Kebbi-Niamey power transmission line due to the collapse of three towers along the line.

According to TCN’s statement released Friday, the firm has declared force majeure on the line due to the collapse of towers T109, T110 and T111 in Chibike, Kebbi State.

The company said the transmission line tripped at 5:38pm on August 26, 2026. It added that an attempt to restore the line through a trial reclosure at 6:03pm was unsuccessful because the line tripped again immediately.

TCN said efforts were being made to assess the damage and restore power transmission through the affected line.

Following the incident, TCN said its linesmen embarked on a fault-finding patrol, during which they discovered the collapsed towers.

According to the company, the towers collapsed due to heavy rainfall and windstorms experienced in the area.

“The incident has affected bulk power transmission to Niamey through the line,” TCN said.

The transmission company said it had mobilised personnel and resources to the affected site to commence rehabilitation of the collapsed towers.

TCN assured that it was deploying all necessary resources to facilitate the speedy reconstruction of the towers and restore the transmission line to service in the shortest possible time.

“We regret the inconvenience this may cause to our customers in Niamey and assure that every effort is being made to restore normal supply promptly,” the company said.
