It seems that violent crimes are coming back to Anambra State, considering that unknown gunmen attacked a police patrol, which led to the death of at least two officers.

Anambra State had been enjoying months of peace after security operations targeting criminal elements in the state, including armed gangs masquerading under the flag of Biafra agitation. But the new incident brings back memories of insecurity in the state.

The attack happened late Sunday night on Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road. The sources reveal that the gunmen waylaid the police officers who were patrolling and started shooting at them.

In the encounter, at least two officers reportedly lost their lives, with their bodies lying on the road. Further details of what transpired were not known until the time of filing this report, while the identity of the gunmen is still unknown.

Efforts will be made by security personnel to investigate the matter and identify the suspects.

A keke driver who was traveling on the road at the time of filing this report saw the incident. He claimed he was traveling the road when he heard gunshots ahead and dumped his tricycle in the process of going into hiding.

In a voice note he made, he said: “After sometime, I came out of the bush and retrieved my Keke and continued my journey, then I got to the spot where the thing happened.

“Two policemen are lying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the road side. I decided to make this voice note to post on the platform because I think one of the policemen is still alive, so that anyone who knows police authorities will tell them to go and save their members,” the distressed keke rider stated.

When our correspondence reached out to the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga for reaction on the incident, his line was not reachable.

No official police reaction has been made on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
