Borno Protest: Youths drive away officials demanding action on abducted students
The Lassa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State experienced some level of tension on Tuesday when irate youths chased away the state government delegation that came to sympathize with the community following the kidnapping of students by suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
The delegation, headed by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abba Wakilbe, had come to the community to sympathize with the families of the kidnapped students.
The atmosphere turned rowdy when the commissioner attempted to address residents at the school premises, with youths and relatives of the abducted students chanting, “We don’t want talk. Go and bring back our children.”
Efforts by the commissioner to calm the crowd were unsuccessful as the gathering became increasingly agitated, forcing him and members of the delegation to leave the community.
Some of the youths were chanting “Don’t play politics with our children.”
As per reports by Central Post Nigeria from Monday, suspected Boko Haram terrorists reportedly carried out an attack on the school premises around 9 am when the students were writing the National Examinations Council examinations. Two teachers died while some students were abducted.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, confirmed the attack to newsmen, who further said that security officials were trying their best to free the abducted students.
While the actual number of abducted persons is not known officially yet, earlier reports indicate that 37 students were missing after the attack.Borno school attack: Angry youths chase govt delegation, demand rescue of abducted students.
