Belgium managed to pull off an extraordinary comeback at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by coming back from two goals behind and emerging victorious against Senegal by a scoreline of 3-2 via extra time to advance to the Round of 16.

The Belgian team secured their hard-fought win through the penalty taken by Youri Tielemans towards the dying moments of the extra time.

Rudi Garcia’s men were trailing 2-0 with just four minutes left on the clock before they managed to put up an amazing late comeback.

It seemed like the African side had things well under control with both goals netted by Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr during the first half giving them a worthy two-goal lead.

However, a breakthrough eventually came for Belgium in the final few moments of the game when substitute Romelu Lukaku guided a pass by Thomas Meunier past the goal line to get one goal closer.

Almost immediately afterwards, Leandro Trossard sent in a cross which was not saved by Mory Diaw, enabling Tielemans to score an equalizer through a header.

There was a heated debate between Tielemans and Trossard in the second half before Lukaku intervened to cool things down.

With the game heading towards penalties, Belgium were granted a late penalty after a VAR decision in the 125th minute of play.

It was ruled by the referee that Lamine Camara had fouled Tielemans prior to the strike of Dodi Lukebakio, which hit the bar.

The Belgian player took his time and made sure to put the ball past the goalkeeper, successfully making sure Belgium turned their game around.

Belgium have advanced to the Round of 16, where they will be facing either the USA or Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on July 7.

On the other hand, this result spells the end of Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup run despite putting up a fight throughout most of the game.
