Atiku wins ADC presidential ticket ahead of 2027 election

Former VP Atiku Abubakar is the presidential flag bearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) going into the 2027 general elections.

This information came to light on Wednesday night via an official statement posted on their official X handle where it was stated that Atiku bagged the ticket after beating out former transportation minister Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

Atiku defeats Amaechi, Hayatudeen to secure ADC Presidential Ticket.

“Final result: Atiku 1,855,787, Amaechi 509,397, Hayatudeen 180,903. Total votes cast in the election: 2,546,457. Total party membership for the election: 3,113,599. Congratulations to Waziri Atiku,” the statement added.

However, the analysis of the results reveals that Atiku emerged victorious by a substantial margin of 1,346,390 votes compared to the second-placed Amaechi, while his win over Hayatu-Deen was by a margin of 1,674,884 votes.

It is noteworthy that the African Democratic Congress had started the process of their presidential primaries on Monday, May 25, 2026, which was attended by members from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The political party decided to undertake the direct primaries following the refusal of their three main aspirants to step aside for one another.

While there were discussions regarding conducting an affirmation process initially, the decision was taken for direct primaries in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026
