3 vigilantes killed as gunmen invade Plateau community at midnight

Three individuals belonging to the local vigilante group were allegedly killed on Saturday evening following an assault on Sabon-Layi village in Gwol District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident which took place around 10 p.m. has brought to the fore renewed fears over deteriorating security conditions in the area.

According to sources in the community, the gunmen entered into the community during the dark hours of the night and began shooting on the members of the local vigilante group.

This is coming after a series of violent attacks in the area, which has seen residents living in constant fear for their security.

Mr. Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for Berom Youth Moulders, confirmed the incident, noting that the killing was a direct assault on the community’s efforts to secure lives and properties.

The spokesman explained that the killed vigilantes were part of the local security initiative, which had been set up to protect the residents from the frequent assaults in the area.

According to Tengwong, the security conditions in Barkin Ladi continue to deteriorate, with residents constantly fearing for their safety despite the presence of security operatives in the area.

“The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community,” he said.

He called on the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to strengthen security in the area by deploying additional personnel to prevent further attacks.
