Ronaldo nets brace as Portugal cruise past Uzbekistan 5-0
Cristiano Ronaldo has just made history once again on Tuesday, becoming the first-ever player to register goals in six World Cups as Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston.
The Portuguese skipper had yet another impressive outing on the global stage and scored two goals in the first half to ensure that he secured his team a vital victory in their opening match of the competition and set out on a strong course towards progressing to the next round of the tournament.
The 41-year-old football legend has yet again shown that he doesn’t believe in age as he became the only male player in the history of the World Cup to score in six different World Cups as he scored two more times in the first half.
His incredible feat adds yet another feather to his cap as the legend continues to make history in the sport.
Portugal did not waste any time in establishing their supremacy against the Uzbek team. Along with Ronaldo’s brace, defender Nuno Mendes was able to score via a brilliant free-kick that left the opposition goalkeeper with nothing but despair.
Things went from bad to worse for the Central Asian team as Abduvohid Nematov scored an own goal, which gave Portugal another three points and made them four goals up at halftime.
Even with a significant advantage, Portugal kept attacking in the second period of the game. In the end, substitute Rafael Leão added the fifth goal to the Portugal tally, which was a perfect five-star game by Roberto Martínez’s boys.
This outstanding victory means three valuable points for the Portuguese in Group K, and they are definitely closer to the knock-out stages of the competition.
Now having recovered their confidence and getting the best performance from their star player, Portugal have all chances to advance successfully through the competition.
