Gunmen storm NIPSS in Plateau, murder 3 security guards

Suspected gunmen carried out an assault on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, that led to the death of at least three security personnel in what has raised concerns about the security situation at one of Nigeria’s leading training institutions for policy makers and leaders.

Sources say that the attack took place late on Sunday evening around 11 o’clock, as the gunmen tried to force their way into the institution to target the residential quarters of participants and officials at the facility.

The gunmen were said to be foiled by the heavy resistance offered by the security operatives at the scene, thus preventing them from gaining access to the participants’ quarters.

It is reported that two soldiers and a police officer lost their lives in the assault, with the latter being the orderly to a retired deputy inspector-general of police who was part of a program at the institute.

No abduction of any participant took place, as the security operatives were able to fend off the armed gunmen before they got into the residential quarter of the participants.

“No participant was abducted because the security forces successfully repelled the attackers before they could enter the residential area,” the source disclosed.

As of press time, the motive behind the assault remains unclear, while authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, security has been reinforced within and around the facility as investigations and manhunt operations have commenced.
