Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Algeria, Mohammed Lele, is dead
The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed the death of the newly appointed ambassador of Nigeria to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, aged 50, due to an extended period of sickness in Kano.
According to the ministry, Mohammed Mahmud Lele died during the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye.
The deceased is described as a diplomat who was working as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division prior to his death. According to the statement, Mohammed Mahmud Lele was nominated by the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and subsequently confirmed by the senate as the ambassador-designate of Nigeria to Algeria.
Mohammed Mahmud Lele was born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976. He earned his economics degree from Bayero University, Kano.
“He is an officer noted for his profound intellectual capability, professional approach, and dedication to the country’s foreign policy agenda,” said the ministry, calling the passing of the diplomat a great loss to the Nigerian Foreign Service as well as the nation.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who accepted his body at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, referred to him as a “hardworking and humble officer” whose service to diplomacy will be sorely missed.
Central Post Nigeria reports that, Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday at Kano following Islamic burial rights, with condolences being extended by the ministry to his family, residents of Bauchi State, and diplomats.
This follows in the wake of efforts by Nigeria to push forward with reforms in the Nigerian Foreign Service.
