15 killed, 17 injured as sleeping trailer driver causes fatal Kwara crash

At least fifteen people are confirmed dead in a single trailer accident that occurred in the Muslim Cemetery area of the Ogbomoso-Oko Olowo stretch of the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara state.

This is according to a statement by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) that the accident occurred at around 2:32 am Monday and involves a DAF XF trailer with license plate number GWL274XC.

According to the report, a total of 48 men were involved in the accident and out of the number, 15 people died while 17 sustained injuries and 16 others escaped unscathed.

The FRSC blamed the cause of the accident on drowsy driving where the injured were noted to suffer from fractures, dislocations, and bruises.

Kabiru Babatunde Kazeem, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kwara State, identified the driver of the trailer as Nasiru Muhammed.

While revealing this, he said the injured people were admitted to the Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for treatment while the remains of the deceased were released to their respective families via the Sarkin Hausawa of Oko Olowo in Moro Local Government Area.

Kazeem further stated that search and rescue teams were still looking for other people who were reported to be buried under the load on the truck.

According to him, the process was done by the staffs of RS8.15 Oloru and RS8.1 Kwara (Oko Olowo Outpost).

The FRSC chairman stated that the command would step up its road safety awareness campaigns through stakeholder discussions and motorists were urged not to do mixed loading, have driver fatigue and travel at night.
