Civil servants to earn more as FG approves hike in allowance
In a major development, the Federal Government has made a bold decision with regard to the well-being of civil servants in the country through an increase in their allowances and benefits in order to improve their morale.
This was stated by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a media briefing held in Abuja on Friday.
As she noted, this is in line with the measures being put in place by the Federal Government to increase the productivity of civil servants and also to motivate them to give their best when discharging their responsibilities.
These adjustments have been made for civil servants under the CONPSS and CONRAISS structures in the country, thereby making it applicable to all kinds of civil servants across the board.
According to Walson-Jack, there were also reforms recommended by the federal executive council (FEC), which stated that “the new peculiar allowances will be made applicable to all grades and will lead to an increase in salaries of junior as well as senior officers.”
It was further reported that “the government had also approved an increase in key allowances such as duty tour allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowance.”
According to Walson-Jack, almost all the allowances mentioned in Public Service Rules will be increased through the reform.
It was also revealed by her that “as per the reform, DTA will be 100 percent to all civil servants enrolled in approved training programme, irrespective of travel.”
“This means that even if your base is in Abuja and you receive your training in Abuja, you qualify for full DTA,” she added.
On the benefits scheme for retiring public servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme, Walson-Jack said there has been a change in the exiting scheme where one qualifies for 100 percent of his or her Total Annual Emoluments as exit gratuity besides pension as from January 1, 2026.
“It is in line with the idea of dignified exit for retiring civil servants; no public servant must be left without financial dignity upon retirement from service,” she added.
The head of Civil Service of the Federation further confirmed the establishment of the Employee Compensation Scheme to cushion workers against any workplace accident or death.
