Relief as security operatives rescue JAMB candidates, others abducted along Calabar/Oron waterways
Through a combined security exercise, the security agencies have successfully freed 14 people from pirates that had kidnapped them within the Calabar/Oron waterways.
This has been achieved through the collaboration between the State Police Command and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The exercise was conducted in an intelligence-based manner after several days of reconnaissance and meticulous planning.
The spokesman for the State Police Command, DSP Timfon John, said that the suspects were put under intense pressure, resulting in the rescue of all the hostages without anyone losing their lives.
The freed individuals are currently undergoing medical treatment and debriefing before being released to their respective families.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, praised the teamwork among the security agencies, stating that it is clear from the mission that cooperation is key when dealing with organized crime.
The commissioner further stated that a lot of effort is being put in place to locate the criminals and arrest them, promising that they would soon face justice.
The command has also assured the people living around the water route as well as the maritime operators that they should expect increased presence in terms of security in that area.
Central Post Nigeria recall that Tension erupted in Cross River State after the reported kidnap of not less than 15 travelers by sea pirates at the bustling Calabar-Oron waterways route in the course of Friday.
From accounts gotten, the travelers were traveling through the inland waterways route when some armed robbers seized them in their boat while they were in transit. The robbers allegedly moved the travelers to another location, much to the fear and apprehensions of others who were traveling at that time.
What is more worrying about the situation is the discovery that some of those kidnapped were students who had gone to write their JAMB UTME examinations This has sent jitters among parents and well-wishers.
This was disclosed by a naval official who preferred anonymity.
Criminal organizations operating in the area were told to stop their criminal activities or face joint force operations against them.
This operation is part of the efforts by the security agencies to stamp out piracy and other forms of violence on the waterways of Nigeria.
