A gang of suspected hoodlums has staged a deadly ambush on the convoy of the Chief of Staff of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, along the Amansea-Ufuma Road, resulting in the deaths of two police officers.

The assault allegedly took place late Sunday night when the suspects ambushed the convoy as it passed through.

In wake of the attack, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has set a 48-hour ultimatum for police formations and tactical units in the state to arrest those behind the attack.

Orutugu made the order during an emergency security briefing at the headquarters of the State Police Command, where he criticized the attack as an assault on state sovereignty.

He immediately acted on the matter, saying the criminals had to face the wrath of the law.

The commissioner of police threatened that no criminal element would ever use darkness as a veil to conduct such attacks in the state.

He was also concerned about new methods adopted by the criminals, mentioning that information indicated that criminals were dressing up in police and military uniforms to escape detection.

Orutugu appealed to the public to always remain vigilant while traversing such vulnerable roads, emphasizing on commuters traveling via Amansea-Ufuma Road since he found it vulnerable and dangerous.

He assured the community that intelligence-driven operations have been initiated and was confident that the criminals would be arrested within the stipulated period of 48 hours.
